چکیده

This paper presents a brief survey of currently ongoing research at DIST – InfoMus Lab on multimodal interfaces with a particular focus on Tangible Acoustic Interfaces (TAIs). A relevant aspect of our research is the multimodal analysis of the high-level expressive, emotional information, the involved non-verbal communication mechanisms, the role of such information and mechanisms in the design and development of expressive multimodal interactive systems based on TAIs. Research is carried out in the framework of the EU-IST project TAI-CHI (Tangible Acoustic Interfaces for Computer-Human Interaction), funded by the European Commission in the Sixth Framework Program. The paper provides a summary of the work performed in the project, including examples of ongoing experiments and prototypes developed with the new EyesWeb 4 open platform for multimodal processing (www.eyesweb.org).

Multimodal and Cross-modal Processing in Interactive Systems Based on Tangible Acoustic Interfaces

This paper presents some recent developments at DISTInfoMus Lab on multimodal and cross-modal processing of multimedia data streams with a particular focus on interactive systems exploiting Tangible Acoustic Interfaces (TAIs). In our research multimodal and cross-modal algorithms are employed for enhancing the extraction and analysis of the expressive information conveyed by gesture in non-verb...

The 'E' in NIME: Musical Expression with New Computer Interfaces

Is there a distinction between New Interfaces for Musical Expression and New Interfaces for Controlling Sound? This article begins with a brief overview of expression in musical performance, and examines some of the characteristics of effective “expressive” computer music instruments. It becomes apparent that sophisticated musical expression requires not only a good control interface but also v...

Grasping gestures: Gesturing with physical artifacts

Gestures play an important role in communication. They support the listener, who is trying to understand the speaker. However, they also support the speaker by facilitating the conceptualization and verbalization of messages and reducing cognitive load. Gestures thus play an important role in collaboration and also in problem-solving tasks. In human–computer interaction, gestures are also used ...

SQUEEZY: Extending a Multi-touch Screen with Force Sensing Objects for Controlling Articulatory Synthesis

This paper describes Squeezy: a low-cost, tangible input device that adds multi-dimensional input to capacitive multi-touch tablet devices. Force input is implemented through force sensing resistors mounted on a rubber ball, which also provides passive haptic feedback. A microcontroller samples and transmits the measured pressure information. Conductive fabric attached to the finger contact are...

Hidden Markov Models Implementation for Tangible Interfaces

Smart objects equipped with inertial sensors can recognize gestures and act as tangible interfaces to interact with smart environments. Hidden Markov Models (HMM) are a powerful tool for gesture recognition. Gesture recognition with HMM is performed using the forward algorithm. In this paper we evaluate the fixed point implementation of the forward algorithm for HMM to assess if this implementa...
